PERIOPERATIVE EDUCATION TO MEET YOUR NEEDS
While growing up, NNBA member, Florence M. Petersen, R.N., B.S.N., C.N.O.R., cannot remember ever wanting to be anything but a nurse. She started on her journey in nursing 40 years ago and has centered her professional career on perioperative (operating room) nursing, education, and orthopaedics. While in nursing school, Petersen developed a love for operating room nursing and decided to specialize in it. Later, she became an author, speaker, and educator so she could use her knowledge and experience to teach other nurses about all aspects of perioperative nursing. This became particularly important when the operating room experience was removed from nursing school curriculums. During her tenure as a hospital surgical services educator, Petersen developed a four-month course, Introduction to Perioperative Nursing Internship.
Petersen realized that other hospitals and surgery centers also needed this type of knowledge. She became an entrepreneur in 1998 and she started her business as a perioperative education consultant. In her business, she provides continuing education programs for nurses and allied health personnel; she contracts with those in the medical industry to provide continuing and in-service education to nurses on their behalf; and she contracts as a consultant faculty member at seminars. Petersen is approved by the Florida State Board of Nursing as a provider of traditional continuing education for nurses.
Regardless of work setting, all nurses need continuing education. Because many ambulatory care facilities do not employ educators, Petersen’s mission is to provide perioperative education to the nursing staff in these facilities.
